The Response of Saturn's Dawn Field‐Aligned Currents to Magnetospheric and Ring Current Conditions During Cassini's Proximal Orbits: Evidence for a Region 2 Response at Saturn

AbstractCassini's 2017 proximal orbits provided the opportunity to examine the auroral field‐aligned currents in the northern hemisphere dawn sector in relation to wider magnetospheric conditions. We combine three recent studies to examine the response of the dawn region auroral field‐aligned currents and the azimuthal ring currents to compressions and expansions of the Saturnian magnetosphere. For compressions of Saturn's magnetosphere resulting in tail reconnection, the currents within the downward current sheet, located equatorward of the main auroral oval, increases in strength with increasing total ring current and location of the peak downwards current moves inwards toward Saturn. While the inverse relation occurs during intervals of quiet or expanded magnetospheric conditions. During compression events there is an increase in the energetic particle intensities, in particular in the protons (35–506 keV), within the downward current region. This current system is akin to an Earth‐like “region 2” field aligned current within Saturn's magnetosphere, with tail reconnection occurring when the magnetosphere is compressed resulting in a partial nightside ring current closed by a downward current near to dawn. Within the upward current sheet, mapping to Saturn's main auroral oval, both non‐rotating subcorotating current and the rotating Planetary Period Oscillations (PPOs) currents flow. The upward current is strongly modulated by the PPOs but also increases in strength, with enhanced high‐energy protons, during intervals of magnetospheric compressions and tail reconnection. We conclude that the enhanced plasma injected into the midnight‐dawn sector during tail reconnection events results in an enhanced subcorotation current system.

The Contribution of Planetary Period Oscillations Toward Circulation and Mass Loss in Saturn's Magnetosphere

AbstractMagnetic reconnection is a process during which magnetic energy is released as kinetic energy. It is considered a crucial driver of energy transport and mass loss within Saturn's magnetosphere. On long‐term timescales, is thought to be predominantly driven by the rapid rotation of equatorially mass‐loaded flux tubes (i.e., the Vasyliunas cycle), but there is some non‐negligible driving from the solar wind as well (i.e., the Dungey cycle). In this study, we investigate an atmospheric driven phenomenon that modulates Saturn's magnetosphere every ∼10.6–10.8 hr, known as planetary period oscillations (PPOs), as an additional driver of magnetic reconnection at Saturn. Using an empirical model of PPO dynamics and Cassini magnetic field and plasma measurements, we find that PPO‐driven magnetic reconnection is likely to occur in Saturn's magnetosphere, however, the occurrence of the phenomenon depends on temporally variable characteristics of the PPO systems and spatial asymmetries within Saturn's equatorial magnetosphere. Thus, it is not expected to be an on‐going process. On year‐long timescales, we find that PPOs are expected to be on par with the Dungey Cycle in driving circulation within Saturn's magnetosphere. However, on ∼1–2 weeks‐long timescales, under specific conditions where PPO‐driven reconnection is expected to be active, this phenomenon can become more significant than the Vasyliunas cycle, and thus dominate circulation within Saturn's magnetosphere. On year‐long timescales, this process is estimated to remove upwards of ∼20% of the mass loaded into the magnetosphere by Enceladus.

Detection of Equatorial Plasma Velocity Modulations Associated With Planetary Period Oscillations in Saturn's Magnetosphere

AbstractWe analyze a database of 8920 measurements of thermal ion vector velocities obtained by the Cassini CAPS/IMS instrument in the near‐equatorial (±10° latitude) region of Saturn's magnetosphere in the radial range of 5.5–21.5 Saturn radii (RS) for the presence of modulations due to planetary period oscillations (PPOs). The data span 2004–2012, from Saturn late southern summer to early northern spring, and are analyzed using PPO phases derived previously from Cassini magnetic field data. For the near‐equinox and northern spring data 2008–2012 we show that both northern and southern PPO modulations are present in the azimuthal velocity component with similar amplitudes, typically ∼3 ± 1.5 km s−1 in the inner part of the system inside ∼10–12 RS, rising to typically ∼9 ± 3.5 km s−1 in the outer part of the system to ∼20 RS. Oscillation phases are overall consistent with expectations for PPO modulations driven from the corresponding polar ionospheres in both cases. For the late southern summer data 2004–2007, southern PPO modulations are also present with similar properties, but no clear northern modulations were detected, indicating weaker amplitudes in this case. These findings mirror similar properties in the amplitudes of magnetic field PPO oscillations observed in previous studies. Our results constitute the first direct detection of PPO‐related velocity modulations in Saturn's magnetospheric plasma. However, no clear PPO effects were found in either the radial or colatitudinal velocities, indicating weaker modulations, if any, in these components.

Planetary Period Oscillations of Saturn’s Dayside Equatorial Ionospheric Electron Density Observed on Cassini’s Proximal Passes

AbstractWe examine electron density data obtained in Saturn’s dayside equatorial ionosphere during Cassini’s proximal periapsis passes, specifically data derived from wave spectra, for evidence of modulation with the planetary period oscillations (PPOs) observed ubiquitously throughout Saturn’s magnetosphere. Clear evidence is found on northern hemisphere inbound passes where northern system modulations occur in the ionospheric diffusive layer peaking at a factor of ∼7 at ∼3,200 km altitude, extending at lesser factors to ∼7,000 km altitude in the transport region. Simultaneous southern system modulations by factors ∼1.5–2.5 are also found above ∼3,400 km. Factor of ∼4–10 northern system modulations are also detected in the diffusive layer and transport regions to ∼6,000 km in the outbound pass data, though southern system modulations were not clearly discerned within the data scatter. Modulations were not detected in the photochemical equilibrium layer at altitudes ∼1,600–2,200 km. Where clear modulations were observed, their phases in the diffusive layer were close to those of the principal PPO meridians (determined previously from near‐apoapsis nightside magnetic data) for both systems, moving to somewhat earlier PPO phases by a few tens of degrees in the transport region. Comparison with magnetic oscillation phases determined directly from proximal pass data shows that electron density maxima occur ∼30°–50° earlier than azimuthal field maxima for both systems, ∼140°–160° earlier than colatitudinal field maxima for the northern system, nearer to antiphase than to leading quadrature, and ∼50°–70° later than colatitudinal field maxima for the southern system, somewhat less than lagging quadrature.

Physical Origin of Recurrent Magnetic Dipolarization Events in Saturn’s Equatorial Plasma Sheet

AbstractWe consider the physical origin of reconnection‐related events in Saturn’s equatorial current sheet revealed by Cassini, specifically the dipolarization events discussed by Yao et al. (https://doi.org/10.1029/2018JA025837) that recur close to the ∼10.7 h planetary period oscillation (PPO) period. We argue that Yao et al.’s preferred recurrence explanation in terms of complete rotations of dipolarized field/current structures around the planet at close to the PPO period is highly implausible. All‐mission observations of ion flows at relevant radial ranges ∼20–30 Saturn radii are essentially invariably sub‐corotational, including reconnection‐related hot ion injections, thus requiring implausible structure propagation at significant speeds through the plasma. We further show their assertion that the nightside events occur at PPO phases unfavorable for reconnection is incorrect. These events instead occur under PPO conditions associated with outward radial plasma displacement and/or a thinning plasma sheet with falling colatitudinal field, shown previously to be optimal for modulated reconnection bursts leading to dipolarizations and plasmoids. We instead suggest these events are related to well‐documented Vasyliunas cycle disturbances, when two reconnection episodes happen to be triggered at similar favorable PPO phases on successive PPO cycles. Yao et al.’s dayside events do occur at phases unfavorable for recurrent reconnection, but may then simply be an effect of periodic field/plasma modulations during the regular PPO cycle combined with subcorotating small‐scale structures often present in the plasma sheet. Both dayside and nightside events can thus be understood within existing knowledge of PPO modulations of the structure and dynamics of Saturn’s equatorial current sheet.

Saturn’s planetary period oscillations: Interhemispheric coupling and enforcement of the ‘plasma cam’ by vertically propagating atmospheric waves

We develop a three-dimensional, linear model of the atmospheric waves postulated to explain Saturn’s planetary period oscillations (PPOs). The polar atmospheres in both hemispheres are represented using a beta-plane model; the equatorial magnetosphere is also represented using plane Cartesian geometry. We describe the interaction of quasi-geostrophic Rossby waves with a layer of Hall conductance whose magnitude varies with latitude. We investigate a situation in which upward-propagating Rossby waves in one hemisphere drive currents which flow into the magnetosphere and the opposite hemisphere. We find that the model describes well the observed current systems when the opposite hemispheres have distinct PPO periods. We present a qualitative model of how driving by atmospheric waves could lead to the two PPO current systems becoming ‘locked’ together, as observed in 2013–2014. However, our model is not able to explain why the PPO current systems became locked together with a specific phase relationship. We also discuss the observed presence of a ‘plasma cam’ density distribution in the magnetosphere, and show that our model can explain how a cam-shaped density distribution is maintained close to corotation in a magnetosphere that is almost universally subcorotating.

Saturn's Nightside Ring Current During Cassini's Grand Finale

AbstractDuring Cassini's Grand Finale proximal orbits, the spacecraft traversed the nightside magnetotail to ∼21 Saturn radii. Clear signatures of Saturn's equatorial current sheet are observed in the magnetic field data. An axisymmetric model of the ring current is fitted to these data, amended to take into account the tilt of the current layer by solar wind forcing, its teardrop‐shaped nature and the magnetotail and magnetopause fringing fields. Variations in ring current parameters are examined in relation to external driving of the magnetosphere by the solar wind and internal driving by the two planetary period oscillations (PPOs), and compared with previous dawn and dayside observations. We find that the relative phasing of the PPOs determines the ring current's response to solar wind conditions. During solar wind compressions when the PPOs are in antiphase, a thick partial ring current is formed on the nightside, dominated by hot plasma injected by tail reconnection. This partial ring current should close partly via magnetopause currents and possibly via field‐aligned currents into the ionosphere. However, during solar wind compressions when the PPOs are in phase, this partial ring current is not detected. During solar wind rarefactions an equatorial “magnetodisc” configuration is observed in the dayside/dawn/nightside regions, with similar total currents flowing at these local times. During very quiet intervals of prolonged solar wind rarefaction, a thin current sheet with an enhanced current density is formed, indicative of a ring current dominated by cool, dense, Enceladus water group ions.

Saturn's Nightside Dynamics During Cassini's F Ring and Proximal Orbits: Response to Solar Wind and Planetary Period Oscillation Modulations

AbstractWe examine the final 44 orbits of the Cassini spacecraft traversing the midnight sector of Saturn's magnetosphere to distances of ~21 Saturn radii, to investigate responses to heliospheric conditions inferred from model solar wind and Cassini galactic cosmic ray flux data. Clear storm responses to anticipated magnetospheric compressions are observed in magnetic field and energetic particle data, together with Saturn kilometric radiation (SKR), auroral hiss, and ultraviolet auroral emissions. Most compression events are associated with corotating interaction regions, producing ~2–3.5 day intervals of magnetospheric activity that are recurrent with the ~26 day solar rotation period (one or two such events per rotation), though one on the final pass is related to a nonrecurrent interplanetary shock possibly associated with an earlier X‐class solar flare. The response to compressions is modulated by the concurrent relative phasing of the northern and southern planetary period oscillation (PPO) systems, with long (>1 planetary rotation) SKR low‐frequency extension (LFE) intervals associated with strong field‐aligned coupling currents being favored when the two PPO systems act together to thin and thicken the tail plasma sheet during each PPO cycle. LFE onsets/intensifications are then favored at thin plasma sheet phases most unstable to reconnection, producing energetic nightside particle injections and poleward contractions of dawn‐brightened auroras. Correspondingly, solar rotation recurrent intervals of magnetospheric quiet conditions also occur with weak energetic particle fluxes and auroral emissions, associated with extended solar wind rarefactions. Overall, the results emphasize how strongly activity in Saturn's magnetosphere is modulated by concurrent heliospheric conditions.

Seasonal Dependence of the Magnetospheric Drag Torque on Saturn's Northern and Southern Polar Thermospheres and its Relation to the Periods of Planetary Period Oscillations

AbstractWe calculate the magnetospheric drag torques on Saturn's northern and southern polar thermospheres during late southern summer in 2008 and northern spring in 2012–2013 using previously derived profiles of ionospheric meridional coupling currents determined from high‐latitude Cassini magnetic field data. We show that the drag torques in the “winter” and “summer” auroral regions are near equal at ~2.3 × 1016 N m, contrary to the recent discussion of Brooks et al. (2019, https://doi.org/10.1002/2019JA026870) who suggest that significant seasonal differences should occur in these regions. Instead, seasonally dependent torques occur in the adjacent polar open field regions, where the “winter” and “summer” torques are ~0.3 × 1016 and ~1.8 × 1016 N m, respectively. We derive a simple rotating disc model of the polar thermosphere and estimate the speed of the poleward flow from midlatitudes required to balance these torques in steady state, finding values of tens of m s−1 consistent with previous numerical modeling. Comparison of the calculated torques with concurrent periods of the northern and southern planetary period oscillations (PPOs) does not suggest a direct connection between these quantities as proposed by Brooks et al., 2019, showing at the least that significant additional factors must be involved. We further note some issues with their scenario for dual modulation of radio emissions, previous observations having shown that the principal oscillatory PPO field‐aligned currents that modulate the emissions rotate in the auroral region with periods ~10.7 ± 0.1 hr, propagating through the more slowly rotating ~15–20 hr period outer magnetospheric plasma, with implications for the proposed “atmospheric flywheel” picture.

Determining the Nominal Thickness and Variability of the Magnetodisc Current Sheet at Saturn

AbstractThe thickness and variability of the Saturnian magnetodisc current sheet is investigated using the Cassini magnetometer data set. Cassini performed 66 fast, steep crossings of the equatorial current sheet where a clear signature in the magnetic field data allowed for a direct determination of its thickness and the offset of its center. The average, or nominal, current sheet half‐thickness is 1.3 RS, where RS is the equatorial radius of Saturn, equal to 60,268 km. This is thinner than previously calculated, but both spatial and temporal dependencies are identified. The current sheet is thicker and more variable by a factor ∼2 on the nightside compared to the dayside, ranging from 0.5–3 RS. The current sheet is on average 50% thicker in the nightside quasi‐dipolar region (≤15 RS) compared to the dayside. These results are consistent with the presence of a noon‐midnight electric field at Saturn that produces a hotter plasma population on the nightside compared to the dayside. It is also shown that the current sheet becomes significantly thinner in the outer region of the nightside, while staying approximately constant with radial distance on the dayside, reflecting the dayside compression of the magnetosphere by the solar wind. Some of the variability is well characterized by the planetary period oscillations (PPOs). However, we also find evidence for non‐PPO drivers of variability.

Saturn's Auroral Field‐Aligned Currents: Observations From the Northern Hemisphere Dawn Sector During Cassini's Proximal Orbits

AbstractWe examine the azimuthal magnetic field signatures associated with Saturn's northern hemisphere auroral field‐aligned currents observed in the dawn sector during Cassini's Proximal orbits (April 2017 and September 2017). We compare these currents with observations of the auroral currents from near noon taken during the F‐ring orbits prior to the Proximal orbits. First, we show that the position of the main auroral upward current is displaced poleward between the two local times (LTs). This is consistent with the statistical position of the ultraviolet auroral oval for the same time interval. Second, we show the overall average ionospheric meridional current profile differs significantly on the equatorward boundary of the upward current with a swept‐forward configuration with respect to planetary rotation present at dawn. We separate the planetary period oscillation (PPO) currents from the PPO‐independent currents and show their positional relationship is maintained as the latitude of the current shifts in LT implying an intrinsic link between the two systems. Focusing on the individual upward current sheets pass‐by‐pass, we find that the main upward current at dawn is stronger compared to near noon. This results in the current density being ~1.4 times higher in the dawn sector. We determine a proxy for the precipitating electron power and show that the dawn PPO‐independent upward current electron power is ~1.9 times higher than at noon. These new observations of the dawn auroral region from the Proximal orbits may show evidence of an additional upward current at dawn likely associated with strong flows in the outer magnetosphere.

Modeling the Temporal Variability in Saturn's Magnetotail Current Sheet From the Cassini F‐ring Orbits

AbstractThe Cassini spacecraft completed 20 highly repeatable orbits during northern summer at Saturn, known as the F‐ring orbits, of which 18 are considered in this study. The spacecraft traversed Saturn's magnetotail current sheet during each apoapsis pass between 16 and 22 Saturn radii over 2‐day intervals and revealed a highly variable radial magnetic field from orbit to orbit. The solar wind and planetary period oscillations (PPOs) are significant sources of temporal variability in the Saturnian magnetosphere. PPOs refer to dual magnetic perturbation systems, one in each hemisphere, which have been observed to modulate the position and thickness of the magnetotail current sheet with a 10.7‐hr periodicity. Thus, we employ a model which considers dual‐modulation effects of the northern and southern PPO systems, together with a model of variable solar wind forcing on the magnetotail current sheet, to investigate their combined temporal effects on the radial magnetic field in the magnetotail. For all 18 F‐ring orbits considered, the modeled radial fields show excellent overall agreement with the temporal variability in the large‐scale structure of the observed radial fields (root mean square error 1.5 nT for 80% of the orbits). The amplitudes of the northern PPO modulations are well constrained between 0.3 and 0.5 Saturn radii, and they exceed the southern modulations by a factor of 1.3. The solar wind forcing is observed to be highly variable from orbit to orbit.

Tracking Counterpart Signatures in Saturn's Auroras and ENA Imagery During Large‐Scale Plasma Injection Events

AbstractSaturn's morningside auroras consist mainly of rotating, transient emission patches, following periodic reconnection in the magnetotail. Simultaneous responses in global energetic neutral atom (ENA) emissions have been observed at similar local times, suggesting a link between the auroras and large‐scale injections of hot ions in the outer magnetosphere. In this study, we use Cassini's remote sensing instruments to observe multiple plasma injection signatures within coincident auroral and ENA imagery, captured during 9 April 2014. Kilometric radio emissions also indicate clear injection activity. We track the motion of rotating signatures in the auroras and ENAs to test their local time relationship. Two successive auroral signatures—separated by ~4 hr UT—form postmidnight before rotating to the dayside while moving equatorward. The first has a clear ENA counterpart, maintaining a similar local time mapping throughout ~9 hr observation. Mapping of the ionospheric equatorward motion post‐dawn indicates a factor ~5 reduction of the magnetospheric source region's radial speed at a distance of ~14‐20 RS, possibly a plasma or magnetic boundary. The second auroral signature has no clear ENA counterpart; viewing geometry was relatively unchanged, so the ENAs were likely too weak to detect by this time. A third, older injection signature, seen in both auroral and ENA imagery on the nightside, may have been sustained by field‐aligned currents linked with the southern planetary period oscillation system, or the re‐energization of ENAs around midnight local times. The ENA injection signatures form near magnetic longitudes associated with magnetotail thinning.

Saturn's Open‐Closed Field Line Boundary: A Cassini Electron Survey at Saturn's Magnetosphere

AbstractWe investigate the average configuration and structure of Saturn's magnetosphere in the nightside equatorial and high‐latitude regions. Electron data from the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer's Electron Spectrometer (CAPS‐ELS) is processed to produce a signal‐to‐noise ratio for the entire CAPS‐ELS time of operation at Saturn's magnetosphere. We investigate where the signal‐to‐noise ratio falls below 1 to identify regions in the magnetosphere where there is a significant depletion in the electron content. In the nightside equatorial region, we use this to find that the most planetward reconnection x‐line location is at 20–25 RS downtail from the planet in the midnight to dawn sector. We also find an equatorial dawn‐dusk asymmetry at a radial distance of >20 RS, which may indicate the presence of plasma‐depleted flux tubes returning to the dayside after reconnection in the tail. Furthermore, we find that the high‐latitude magnetosphere is predominantly in a state of constant plasma depletion and located on open field lines. We map the region of high‐latitude magnetosphere that is depleted of electrons to the polar cap to estimate the size and open flux content within the polar caps. The mean open flux content for the northern and southern polar caps are found to be 25 ± 5 and 32 ± 5 GWb, respectively. The average location of the open‐closed field boundary is found at invariant colatitudes of 12.7 ± 0.6° and 14.5 ± 0.6°. The northern boundary is modulated by planetary period oscillations more than the southern boundary.

Magnetic Field Observations on Cassini's Proximal Periapsis Passes: Planetary Period Oscillations and Mean Residual Fields

AbstractWe analyze periapsis pass magnetic field data from the final 23 orbits of the Cassini spacecraft at Saturn, uniquely encompassing auroral, subauroral, ring region, and intra‐ring field lines, to determine the planetary period oscillations (PPOs) and mean residual fields in these regions. Dual modulation by northern and southern PPO systems is found almost continuously, demonstrating for the first time the presence of PPOs on and inside ring region field lines. The azimuthal component displays the largest ~10–15nT PPO amplitudes on auroral field lines, falling across the subauroral region to ~3–5 nT on main ring field lines in the northern hemisphere, less in the southern hemisphere, while increasing to ~5–8 nT on D ring and intra‐D ring field lines. Auroral and subauroral amplitudes mapped along field lines are in good agreement with previous analyses in regions of overlap. Colatitudinal and radial field oscillations generally have a half and a quarter the amplitude of the azimuthal component, respectively. Inner region oscillation phases are typically several tens of degrees “earlier” than those of outer subauroral and auroral regions. Mean residual poloidal fields (internal and ring current fields subtracted) show quasi‐sinusoidal latitude variations of ~2.5nT amplitude, with radial and colatitudinal fields approximately in quadrature. Mean azimuthal fields peaking at ~15 nT are approximately symmetrical about the equator on and inside D ring field lines as previously reported, but are unexpectedly superposed on ~3–5nT “lagging” fields which extend continuously through the ring region onto subauroral field lines north and south.

The Structure of Planetary Period Oscillations in Saturn's Equatorial Magnetosphere: Results From the Cassini Mission

AbstractSaturn's magnetospheric magnetic field, planetary radio emissions, plasma populations, and magnetospheric structure are all known to be modulated at periods close to the assumed rotation period of the planetary interior. These oscillations are readily apparent despite the high degree of axisymmetry in the internally produced magnetic field of the planet and have different rotation periods in the northern and southern hemispheres. In this paper we study the spatial structure of (near‐)planetary period magnetic field oscillations in Saturn's equatorial magnetosphere. Extending previous analyses of these phenomena, we include all suitable data from the entire Cassini mission during its orbital tour of the planet so as to be able to quantify both the amplitude and phase of these field oscillations throughout Saturn's equatorial plane, to distances of 30 planetary radii. We study the structure of these field oscillations in view of both independently rotating northern and southern systems, finding spatial variations in both magnetic fields and inferred currents flowing north‐south that are common to both systems. With the greatly expanded coverage of the equatorial plane achieved during the latter years of the mission, we are able to present a complete survey of dawn‐dusk and day‐night asymmetries in the structure of the oscillating fields and currents. We show that the general structure of the rotating currents is simpler than previously reported and that the relatively enhanced nightside equatorial fields and currents are due in part to related periodic vertical motion of Saturn's magnetotail current sheet.

The Dynamics of Saturn's Main Aurorae

AbstractSaturn's main aurorae are thought to be generated by plasma flow shears associated with a gradient in angular plasma velocity in the outer magnetosphere. Dungey cycle convection across the polar cap, in combination with rotational flow, may maximize (minimize) this flow shear at dawn (dusk) under strong solar wind driving. Using imagery from Cassini's Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph, we surprisingly find no related asymmetry in auroral power but demonstrate that the previously observed “dawn arc” is a signature of quasiperiodic auroral plasma injections commencing near dawn, which seem to be transient signatures of magnetotail reconnection and not part of the static main aurorae. We conclude that direct Dungey cycle driving in Saturn's magnetosphere is small compared to internal driving under usual conditions. Saturn's large‐scale auroral dynamics hence seem predominantly controlled by internal plasma loading, with plasma release in the magnetotail being triggered both internally through planetary period oscillation effects and externally through solar wind compressions.

Driving Planetary Period Oscillations From the Hall Conducting Layer of Saturn's Upper Atmosphere

AbstractWe develop a simple physical model of the planetary period oscillations (PPOs) observed in Saturn's magnetosphere. The model couples together flows and currents in five two‐dimensional systems: an upper and lower atmospheric layer in each hemisphere, and the equatorial magnetosphere. We neglect the curved geometry of the planet and the magnetosphere but use a simple scaling argument to account for the very different sizes of the two systems. We show that it is possible to drive a PPO current system with many of the observed properties by invoking a twin vortex system in the Hall conducting layer of either hemisphere. The twin vortex system is able to generate divergent currents because our model includes a representation of the latitudinal variation of conductance. The large inertia and low Pedersen conductance of this layer of the atmosphere means that the twin vortex system and the PPO currents have a very stable rotation velocity and a very long dissipation timescale, explaining the long term persistence and stability of the PPO current systems. For a range of realistic parameters, part of the PPO current system closes through the equatorial magnetosphere, and part through the opposite hemisphere, as observed. We make predictions about the phase relationships between these closure currents that allow our model to be tested. Although the wind speeds required to produce the observed currents are implausibly large, interaction with enhanced electron density in the auroral regions reduces the necessary wind speeds to plausible values.

Seasonal structures in Saturn's dusty Roche Division correspond to periodicities of the planet's magnetosphere

We identify multiple periodic dusty structures in Saturn's Roche Division, a faint region spanning the ∼ 3000 km between the A and F rings. The locations and extent of these features vary over Cassini's tour of the Saturn system, being visible in 2006 and 2016–2017, but not in 2012–2014. These changes can be correlated with variations in Saturn's magnetospheric periods. In 2006 and 2016–2017, one of the drifting magnetospheric periods would produce a 3:4 resonance within the Roche Division, but in 2012–2014 these resonances would move into the A ring as the magnetospheric periods converged. A simple model of magnetic perturbations indicates that the magnetic field oscillations responsible for these structures have amplitudes of a few nanotesla, comparable to the magnetic field oscillation amplitudes of planetary period oscillations measured by the magnetometer onboard Cassini. However, some previously unnoticed features at higher radii have expected pattern speeds that are much slower than the magnetospheric periodicities. These structures may reflect an unexpectedly long-range propagation of resonant perturbations within dusty rings.

Modulations of Saturn's UV Auroral Oval Location by Planetary Period Oscillations

AbstractIt is well known that Saturn's magnetospheric dynamics are greatly influenced by the so‐called planetary period oscillations (PPOs). Based on Cassini Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) imagery, it has been shown previously that the UV auroral intensity is clearly modulated in phase with rotating field‐aligned current (FAC) systems associated with the PPOs. Here we expand upon this investigation by using the same data set to examine the PPO‐induced spatial modulation of the main auroral oval. We present a robust algorithm used for determining the location of the main emission in Cassini‐UVIS images. The location markers obtained are then used to calculate the statistical location of the auroral oval and its periodic displacement due to the PPO FACs and the related ionospheric flows. We find that the largest equatorward displacement of the main arc lags behind the PPO‐dependent statistical brightening of the UV aurora by roughly 45–90° in both hemispheres and is not colocated with it as the present model based on magnetometer observations suggests. We furthermore find the center of the auroral oval by fitting circles to the main emission and analyze its elliptic motion as the entire oval is displaced in phase with the PPO phases. It is demonstrated that the periodic displacements of both the auroral oval arc and its center are larger when the two PPO systems rotate in relative antiphase than when they are in phase, clearly indicating that interhemispheric PPO FAC closure modulates not only the intensity but also the location of the main UV auroral emission.
